Coloring your hair for the first time? Here's what to expect

What happens at your first color appointment from the first question we ask to your first shampoo at home

Most people put off first time hair color for one reason: nobody has ever walked them through the process. You know what you want, but you don't know what happens between sitting down and seeing the finished product in the mirror. We're color specialists in Greensboro, so this is a regular conversation in our salon. It's less mysterious than it looks. Here's the whole visit at Adelaide Beauty, including what permanent hair color does inside each strand, and what the six weeks after a color service look like.

What to bring to your first hair color appointment

Bring an honest hair history. For your first time hair color, it's the most useful thing you can give your stylist. "Never colored" has to mean never: no box dye three summers ago, no henna phase, no drugstore gloss that supposedly washed out. Your hair remembers all of it, even if you'd rather it didn't, and every bit of it changes how new color behaves. If any of that sounds familiar, start with a color correction consult for old box dye and banding instead.

A few other things that help:

  • A photo of what you want and one of what you don't. The second one is usually more useful.
  • Any past reaction you've had to hair dye, even a mild one. Please tell us when you book and when you’re with your stylist.

The consultation is where your color gets decided

Every visit at Adelaide Beauty starts with a real conversation, and for first time hair color, it's the most important part of the visit. Your stylist will look at your natural level, which is how light or dark your hair is on a scale of 1 to 10, your undertone, how much gray you have, and how you actually wear your hair on a day-to-day basis.

At this point, you will get a straight answer. Permanent hair color can lift hair that's never been colored a couple of shades and add tone in the same step. Going from dark brown to pale blonde is a different service, and we'd rather tell you that now instead of after.

Your final price gets settled at this point before anything is mixed. Our starting rates for every color service give you a baseline, but the final price depends on length and density. We don’t want there to be any surprises at checkout.

What permanent hair color does while you sit

Permanent hair color is mixed with developer to open the cuticle, the outer layer of each strand, so pigment can get inside and stay put. That's why it grows out instead of washing out. It's also the work behind our full single-process color mixed for your hair instead of off a swatch card.

Bottles of 10, 20, 30 and 40 volume cream developer on the colour shelf.

On never-colored hair, your stylist will usually do the mid-lengths and ends first and the roots last. Heat from your scalp makes color develop faster near the root, so putting it all on at once is how people end up with bright roots and darker ends. Stylists call that hot roots.

Processing time runs about 30 to 45 minutes. Tingling is normal, but burning isn't, so speak up if you notice any burning at all. Otherwise, grab a coffee and settle into one of our green chairs at Adelaide Beauty. You're not in anyone's way.

One thing to know going in: a single all-over shade won't add dimension. If you're picturing brightness and contrast, foiled highlights that add real brightness and dimension are probably where your first color should start.

The mirror, then the car

Everybody has a story about color that looked perfect in the salon and wrong in the car. That's almost always because of lighting. Any of our color specialists in Greensboro will check your color in honest light before you leave. We went through this whole building making sure every light is 5000K daylight so every light tells the truth. It’s critically important the shade you approve in our mirror is the same one in your rearview. It's a small obsession. We have a few.

Your stylist will finish with a blowout, tell you what products they used and why, and tell you when you should come back. Your stylist will make product recommendations so you can properly take care of your hair until you return.

Your first six weeks with new hair color

The first two or three days after first time hair color matters the most. Give it 48 to 72 hours before your first shampoo, then wash with cool water and a color-safe, sulfate-free shampoo. A little color in the rinse that first time is normal.

Around weeks four to six, you'll see your natural color growing in. That's when most guests come back for a Color Retouch to match new growth to the shade you already have. If the tone goes flat before then, a Glaze brings the shine back in about 20 extra minutes.

If a root appointment every month sounds like more than you signed up for, say so. Hand-painted balayage that grows out soft, with no hard line can stretch to three or four months between visits.

A few more first-timer questions

Will permanent hair color damage my hair?

Any color that opens the cuticle asks something of your hair. A single shade on hair that's never been colored is one of the gentlest chemical services we do, though. Most of the dryness people blame on color comes later, from unprotected hot tools and harsh shampoo.

Should I try demi-permanent first?

If commitment is what's holding you back from first time hair color, it's a fair place to start. A demi-permanent glaze adds tone and shine without lifting, then fades with no grow-out line. It won't make you lighter, and it won't cover much gray.
